Medicine gourd. Along with many other gourd containers with figurative and architectonic stoppers, the gourd was the property of an ethnic Zulu herbalist with a mainly Zulu clientele in western Swaziland. Each vessel stored a different vital ingredient or potion and most of the stoppers appeared to be the work of different carvers.

The carved wooden stopper, depicting a mother with a baby on her back, identifies the gourd and its medicinal contents while acting as medium with the spirits that oversee the efficacy of the medicine.
